I'D pay extra to keep OAPs off the early bus, says your anonymous letter writer last week.
I am not sure whether your correspondent is male or female but he or she sure seems very grumpy.
I am 68 and fall into both camps.
I have a bus pass (not used).
I am currently able to have a car but would "use the bus for an outing" – yes f
ree entertainment rather than the purpose of travelling for a valid reason – well the valid reason would be entertainment.
Perhaps this person does not yet realise how far an old age pension goes – there is certainly not a lot to spend on "entertainment" so if a few people get on the bus free, travel to Worthing, Shoreham or anywhere get off, have a cup of tea, walk round the shops and get back on the bus to go home then – that's entertainment for some of them.
On the other hand, I do feel that OAPs are being unreasonable to want the early bus.
Some say "what about hospital appointments, etc" then ask the hospital for a later one!
If I get a hospital appointment which would entail driving during the "rush hour", then I ask for one that suits me.
The people driving or travelling to work on buses are an aggressive lot.
Stay away from them.
