THIS morning (Wednesday, August 27) the crossing gates remained closed from around 7.47am to 7.54am to allow two trains in each direction to pass, resulting in even longer queues of traffic to form than is usual at this time of the day.
The gates were lowered for he first of the westbound trains - which was running late.
It was at least two minutes before that train passed, in other words before it had even left Worthing station.
Subsequently there were suuficient intervals to allow the gates to be raised if only very briefly, as some signallers clearly often endeavour to do.
However, it is this very inconsistency of operation that is the real issue here, and presumably at other crossings along the West Coastway too.
Last year the Herald followed up a stream of letters with an article quoting - as I recall - both the then WSCC cabinet member for highways & transport and a Network Rail official as saying avidable delays such as today's as being unacceptable!
Fine words but when, if ever, can the long-suffering users expect to see some action to alleviate this major problem?
